High Fashion Street Stylin'
Leather Jackets & Sneakers; a How-To
Words by Billy George
Weekends are sacred. There aren't many that roll by that you get to enjoy every bloody damn minute of them! And when you do, it's already Sunday evening and you're left dreading a return to a busy working week. How does this always happen? Am I alone?
I've been working a lot in recent weekends, and any spare moment is golden to me. They come few and short lately. It's quite upsetting. The last two months have flown by and it's getting close toward the end of Winter. Melbourne's bitter snap colds are going to be fewer as we approach Spring. But it's still a million degrees colder than Spring so wearing leather is a necessity (well at least to me!).
Lately, I've been digging the whole tan/sand coloured trousers (these actually aren't chinos!). They're a pair I picked up discounted from Zara a little while back that are just so comfortable to wear in both the colder and warmer months. Such a great buy! Paired with a grey marle tee to reduce the contrast works brilliantly with a black leather jacket; the hat just tops it all off (no pun intended).
What I have always been unsure about is wearing sneakers with leather jackets. It took me a while to warm up to the idea but I think I finally have nailed down the premise. I saw a lot of mens street style imagery from across the globe where sneakers were worn with the classic moto-inspired leather jacket and I wasn't a fan.
You want to know why?
It's cause they were wearing Nike's. Or Adidas NMDs. Yeezy's even. These are all 'in your face' sneakers that generally draw a lot of attention. The focus goes from the shoe, to the jacket and back to the shoe and it doesn't look quite right. To me, it's an amateur move. Your blending a classic and very traditional menswear look with a very modern and technical piece. It's like eating lamb and tuna fish. Ew.
To me, a sneaker should be simple when worn with a leather jacket. It could be a plain white leather sneaker that tones in quite well because it's keeping true to the leather on leather style. Or you could go a canvas classic like the Converse collaborated sneakers by Comme Des Garcons that I'm wearing here. There's a little print on the sneaker, but it's definitely not a show stopper.
