The Season of the Military Coat
A statement piece that comes and goes, but how do you pull it off?

2016 has longingly been the year of military wear. Camo has come back with vengeance, fighter-pilot inspired bomber jackets are a thing and military field jackets/trench coats/peacoats are continuing strong. With the prevalence of online shopping, getting off your butt and getting into stores has never been easier!
The preoccupation of military has been a trend that comes and goes quite quickly. Though you rarely see me in camo pieces, the military inspired coats and bombers have been a strong contender for my love. A tradition with lasting impact, it's a way of putting an emphasis on function over form; quality pieces that have a purpose! What more do you want in life?
So far, this season's designers, from high fashion to on-budget labels, give us contemporary design rich with personal flavour, and not just your basic camouflage-inspired colours.
There are a number of key pieces you need to look out for!
Used by fighter pilots, this classic TopGun-eque look has been a timeless piece. Coming in and out of season with different interpretations, the return to the classics this year has seen it bring back it's functional side. With the reversible orange inner can change up your outfit so easily, so getting the right piece is perfect. A socially acceptable bomber that works brilliantly with a simple white tee and indigo jeans. Crisp!
What can I say? My love for a good peacoat is endless. It's a warm winter necessity. But why, you ask, do you love it so? Well, for it's ability to be so transformable. From a smart business look (when worn with a suit) to casual attire (layered up with denim goodness), you can't go wrong! Lately, I've been wearing these coats with blue jeans and tees, even layered up with scarves and denim jackets. It's a jacket that is hard to look past.
The Field Jacket was originally part of WW2 uniform. It has, in time, been reinterpreted by the Army Core and fashion brands a like as it pairs so well with everything! The mix of fabrics, design details and varieties of added pieces (hoods, fastenings, drawstrings, etc.) have allowed for maximum wearable pleasure. It's a rugged look, so wear this with some of your favourite denim (that's quite well worn in) and some boots!
Ahhhh. The Duffle Coat is a winter favourite of mine. It's a military look without being too blatant. Winter has passed in Australia, but a key piece like this will take your right through Spring and even right through to those chillier Summer nights. A good quality duffle will transcend seasons, never really going out of style. Keep it basic on the colours (dark greens, navies, blacks) and you're set! Pair this with some crisp chino's or even over suit and you've got a great look that any modern man can pull off.
My favourite has got to be the Trench Coat. Elegant, stylish and timeless. For the simple fact that it goes so well over a suit or shirt right through to casually. Used for a sophisticated edge by WW1 officers, this versatile option takes you from the work place to Friday night drinks quite easily. My favourite look is a tonal tee tucked into a pair of trousers and loafers. A classy edge to a casual look.
